Time to say Goodbye...
On Sunday, November 18, 2007 I had to one of the hardest things in my life, I had to say goodbye To Port Lodge, the dorm that I have spent the last 5 months in. As I looked out my window plane seat leaving Perth, I wondered to myself where did it all go? Where did the first semester of my senior year go? This has been the best experience that I could of ever asked for. I met such wonderful people that I will always remember and love. I learned that you could survive out side your comfort zone and become a better person by doing it. I saw the good in each and every one of the students whom I lived with. They accepted a Sacred Heart girl with open arms and I have such respect for all of them. There are several people who I want to thank for making my experience the best it could have been. My Dorm, Sarah, Elizabeth, David are all so amazing, kind hearted and I am so thankful to have shared my journey with them. Everyone who I met in Australia has been so welcoming to me. I have been filled with such different emotions during the past few days, Happy that I got exactly what I wanted out of this experience, new friends, a learning experience, and to be completely independent…but sad that I had to leave such a beautiful country and absolutely amazing friends. I so excited to be with my family and friends again considering that I have not seen them 5 months. I will keep in touch with the people that I met .. I encourage all who have the opportunity that I have had to go abroad and study.. it’s been the best time of my life! I am excited to get back to the Zoo as well, I should be back on Friday November 30.. so keep listening for my return!
Broome and One Month
Last week myself and 26 other abroad students flew to Broome, which is located in Northern Australia. We went to Kimberly and got the opportunity to live with an Aboriginal community. We lived in tents with ants, had spiders in the bathrooms and was in 100-degree weather. I was dirty and sweaty the whole entire time, which was extremely hard for me because I have never camped before. I am proud of myself because I thought I would of complained more considering I was way out of my comfort zone, but I didn’t. However I did learn a lot about the Aboriginal community and culture. Maria and Collin were two members of the Aboriginal community who took care of us, fed us and made sure we were safe at all times. It is really amazing that they take the time and patience to teach all of us about their life styles. I would love to go on and tell you about all the things that we did. I can’t it’s sorta like “fight club” no one talks about it. Lets just say that I never thought I would learn how to make a spear out of a tree branch. It was a once and a lifetime opportunity and I am glad I went. I learned a lot but I am also so happy to be back in Fremantle.
I leave a month from Friday. I have a senior project to continue to work on which is a documentary on my experience here in Australia. It’s becoming more and more difficult to do, considering there are many directions I can go with producing it. I have one month left to film the rest of my time here. I go back to another world when I get back to the states. I go back to my family, friends and my last semester of college. In one month I leave a beautiful country and say good-bye to people who I will never forget.
