SHUT UP! My Teen Angst Song

Thursday, May 8, 2008, 10:36 PM EST [General]

As I tip on the edge of growing up, I savor the last few drops of my childhood. Nowadays that consists of yelling the lyrics to "Totally ****ed" while stomping around my apartment, hoping no one calls the cops. But before Spring Awakening, and in the age of my own teen angst there were other songs that got me fired up.

The epitome and the rite of passage of being a teenager is definitely locking yourself in your room and playing air guitar on your bed. You turn the music up to deafening levels and just let everything go. For me, I was usually rocking out to some pop punk band that was on frequent rotation on MTV or something. MxPx, Blink 182, Simple Plan, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, New Found Glory- those were all my jams. But my teen angst anthem was definitely "Shut Up" by Kelly Osbourne. I may be in the minority as far as being a Kelly O. fan but this song was just so... Perfect.

"Blah Blah, Blah Blah, Blah Blah, Blah Blah. That's wha**** sounds like you said to me."

Oh yes, this song has "blah blah blah" in it too. Such a splendid four letter word, don't you think?

    "Shut up!
Don't want to hear your voice.
    Shut up!
I'm sick of all the noise.
    There's nothing you can say
That means a damn thing to me.
    Shut up!"

Word. That's what I wanted to say to EVERYONE. No one could tell me what to do or what to think- I was not having it. I was my own person and no guidance counselor or parent was going to tell me otherwise. "Shut Up" was definitely my PG version of "Totally ****ed" and it was the freaking story of my life- what else could I even ask for?
