    Under My Umbrella

Sunday, April 1, 2007, 10:00 PM EST [General]

So I was up at the mighty Z100 this fine Sunday, trying to get a jump on what looks to be another busy week, when Rihanna's "Under My Umbrella" came on (at Z, the station is pumped into your office so you have no choice but to listen to it. This is a good thing: not only is Z100 awesome, but it keeps me from listening to Beck's Mutations when I'm down or Afghan Whigs' Gentleman when I'm really angry with someone or The Sound of Music soundtrack when I'm feeling giddy. All good ways heighten emotions, but maybe not with coworkers around).

Back to Rihanna: girl, you know I love you -- I'm proud of have cohosted one of your first showcases -- but "Unfaithful" was a liiiiiiittle melodramatic. Lyrics are not the reason I'm usually feeling Rihanna's music.

So her new joint, "Under My Umbrella," comes on, and needing a break from paperwork, I actually listen to the lyrics. And you know what? They're really sweet! Simple, yes, but sometimes simple is best. They don't all have to be System of a Down tracks. It just put a smile on my face that's still planted there, even as I get my Entourage on.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the queen of corny.
